Tragedy spurs Michael Berg to run for Congress as a Green
Michael Berg, a committed anti-war activist for many years, is hoping to run as the Green Party candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in Delaware. As he says on his website, " I am seeking the nomination of the Green Party of Delaware for Congress because the people of our state and our country want peace, jobs, and a culture of truth that looks to our common future." Berg was recently arrested at the Pentagon with other protesters, including Cindy Sheehan, and helped launch the new initiative, Voters for Peace. He was the first to pledge not to vote for any candidate who is not pledged to peace. The spate of publicity brought national attention, including a story in the New York Times on March 29 and interviews with the BBC, the AP and CNN. Berg became nationally known in May 2004, after the airing of a graphic video of the beheading of his son Nick in Iraq. At the time, Berg addressed the press saying his son had died for the sins of George Bush and Donald Rumsfeld. In the ensuing two years, Berg has traveled throughout the country and abroad, bringing the message of peace and opposition to the war in Iraq. Berg relocated from Pennsylvania to Delaware continuing his anti-war activities. He soon met local Delaware Greens and changed his registration from Independent to Green. After extensive conversations, he decided the logical extension of his anti-war activities would be to run for U.S. Representative against seven-term Republican Mike Castle. Despite his reputation as a GOP moderate, Castle has never wavered from his support of the war abroad, tax cuts for the rich, and cuts in government services at home.
